On this date in 1936, German airship Hindenburg could be seen flying low over Halifax and other areas of the province.

Hindenburg over Woodside, Dartmouth
The next year would be the Hindenburg's last as it came to an abrupt end in 1937 at the Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey. The Hindenburg caught fire, igniting the flammable gas within, killing 35 of the 97 passengers. The incident shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era.
