Lady Drive Her was founded by Crissy McDow in June 2017 with the support of 12 women drivers.
Crissy already runs 2 successful taxi companies, and has regularly fielded calls from customers requesting a female driver. She says that's how the business got started. She asked 12 of her female colleagues if they wanted to form a group, and the rest is history.
Crissy McDow:
"We have all been licensed, insured, and regulated at the HRM and the Halifax airport for over 20 years. Plus, I live and breathe this business, so to me, it was not difficult to add another type of service."
Because of the gender-specific service, there has been some pushback in social media and the news from male drivers, who feel Lady Drive Her is sending the wrong message - that other cab companies are offering an unsafe service.
McDow's response: "In no way am I discriminating or offending the male drivers offering cab services. After all, I use male drivers in my other companies. And yes, we will welcome more ladies to our group, but remember that drivers need the proper license whether a limo or taxi at the HRM first, and vehicles need to be approved as well."
"This is the first all-female legally-licensed car service in all of Canada that I know of, so we will have to see if the market is there. To be honest, I have to stop dealing with controversy and focus on providing this service. If customers prefer to take a LADY DRIVE HER to and from the airport, they now have a choice. I have a right to provide this service to those who want it."
"Remember, we will not refuse a male passenger. In fact, we have bookings already from men calling and emailing for themselves and their families. Let people have a choice, and if we can help, well…power to the people."
